Getting help as a family member
A strong, supportive and loving relationship with a partner or family member can play a key role in a survivor’s recovery: you are important and you can help them, although it may not be easy and it may take time.
Where can I go for help?
- Many agencies working with abused adults and children have, as a part of their service, support for non-abusing partners, families and friends, so don’t be afraid to ask.
- There are websites aimed specifically at partners of survivors, which give advice and have discussion forums where you can connect with people in similar situations.
- Books are available from bookshops and online retailers, which can help you to understand and offer advice on how to help your partner.
- It may be useful to have some professional guidance from a therapist or counsellor.
How long does recovery take?
The recovery process varies from person to person. If the survivor is in therapy or counselling, things may get worse before they get better as sadness and anger can surface.
